There's something in the water....

I swear, the Erie County Water Authority is behind these incidents! *pam proclaims sarcastically* (I’m safe – I have well water!)

Really, I can’t explain it any other way. In the past week and a half, there have been 5 bizarre incidents of vehicles crashing into the front of stores and restaurants. Four crashes in the same suburb. One caused 2 deaths.
And it happened again today.
The majority of these accidents have involved elderly drivers – and when I say elderly, I mean over 70 yo.
It’s spawned quite the uproar, with town officials proposing barriers between storefronts and parking lots, and others demanding mandatory retesting of senior drivers.

Actually, I would be in favor of mandatory testing. Of everybody, not just seniors. But I can’t see it ever happening. For one thing, how would they ever pay for the additional testers? The DMV is already cut down to the bone. And I don’t want to get taxed even more in this stupid state. It’s also an issue that is politically charged. Whoever would propose such legislation would commit political suicide.

And speaking of suicide, I don’t know what to say about the kid from Williamsville who was bullied and killed himself. I feel sorry for the family. I guess this story really went national.
Times are so different from when I went to school – 40+ years ago.
I feel so out of the loop because I’m not really into the social networking scene (LJ is the extent of my interest), but I find it hard to believe that internet bullying would push someone over the edge. I was a bullied kid in 4th grade, and eventually I hauled off and punched her. End of story. Nowadays, I guess I’d be suspended. Schools need to really punish the kids who are doing this. No mercy.

On another note, I found this poor decayed goldfinch on the deck. I surmise that he flew into the large windows. Happens quite often, usually in the spring, when the birdie hormones are flowing. I wish I had found it earlier, because I could have recorded the decay process. I find it very interesting. Yes, I am morbid that way. Always was, and always will be.
Plus, it would have made a great series of shots to enter in the fair next year.

And, talking about decay, here is a shot of some pretty oranges fungus amongst the poison ivy on one of the logs I need to cut up and split. Man, summer is officially over. I have to get my aft in gear and prepare for winter.

[Stoopid LJ. Messed up my first post!]

That goldfinch is super weird-looking, I've never seen one so far along in the decay process. I totally understand it being interesting O.O

The fungus is quite pretty!!

I see lots of dead things around here. It never fails to fascinate me.

It looked even better in the sunlight.

Oooooo the skull! Fantastic!

Those are indeed some very pretty orange fungi!

Yes, one more skull for my collection.
But, looks like the eyeballs are still there! ewww.

Are they the actual eyeballs or just the lens? Or ...don't birds have a series of thin, tiny bones under the iris or something? I've seen reconstructions...maybe just certain kinds of birds? I don't know, I took mammalogy not ornith. ^^;; Eyeballs being one of the squishier bits you'd think those would decay pretty quickly?

You can always tell when someone has crashed through a building around here because they always put up those giant concrete planters AFTER the crash has happened.
I'm glad I'm on a hill with a stone retaining wall (which did get hit one high school graduation many moons ago)

Hindsight, you know.

Not that many places have barriers in front of the storefronts. I wonder if it's because it makes it too hard to plow the snow?

At ease, Disease! There's a fungus among us...

I've got fungus everywhere.

Outside! not on me!
I may be old, but I'm not decaying - yet!

The bird....it almost looks like metal or like the beginnings of a steampunk statue. I thought I would be disgusted by the picture, but it's almost..... I don't know what. It's unique.

The vibrant orange and green amidst the dull grey/brown is so electrifying. Please enter that in a contest! :-D

It struck me as unique, also. The feathers got all greased up and look like metal.
Actually, I'd like to enter the bird under 'Still Life'. BWAHAHA!

I admit, I LOL'ed. I'm ashamed of myself.
