Welcome To The Thunderdome

Yesterday was a busy day.
My McCoy pottery buddy, Kathy, invited me to go to the Seneca Casino in Niagara Falls to see "Mayhem In The Mist ‘The Series’ ” – cage fighting.

With visions of hunky Mad Max look-alikes beating down oponents in a huge, steel birdcage dancing in my brain, I said OK. I went with her last year to a kick-boxing match, and we had a good time. But, we get along very well - no matter what we do or where we go. She’s the friend I took with me to BotCon.
She picked me up around 3:30pm. It was such a beautiful day, I wished we had made time to go see the falls. I haven’t been there in years. But I consoled myself with the thought of seeing that famous buffet in the casino and stuffing myself until I couldn’t walk.
Shot of the mist from the falls as we get closer.

Here we are.

Last time I was at the casino was back in 2003, when it had just opened. Kath and I were there to see Williams & Ree (The Indian and the White Guy), a slightly-irreverent, adult comedy team. If you get the chance to ever see them, go.  It’ll be worth the bucks.   http://www.williamsandree.com/index.htm?id=166
Off topic. Oops.
But, the place was larger than we remembered, and we had to ask attendants a few times where we were going. Only got lost once.
Here’s a shot of the main floor from above. We had just come in from the parking ramp. The stained glass windows are beautiful.  Same windows as you see in above pic, just from indoors.  All those litle white lights you see are slot machines.

Found the buffet room and made a reservation. Having about a half hour to kill, we went to play some slots. I found them quite confusing, what with playing 3 rows & 4 lines or 15 rows & 9 lines or whatever. I just waited until the machine went ding! ding! and presumed I won. All in all, I came out with $4.95 more than I started with. It was fun and I can see how people get addicted. All those lights and bright colors can really hypnotize you.   Kathy lost her entire $5, but didn’t complain. Yeah, we were playing nickel machines. No high rollers here, more’s the pity.  Someday I'd like to visit Vegas.
Time for dinner.
Holy crap-ola. The buffet was Aye-Mazing. It was definitely the best buffet I have ever seen. I tried to stay away from the normal stuff I could make at home. I had fried catfish, shrimp scampi, 2 helpings of prime rib, stuffed pepper, more shrimp, string beans (which I decided were too normal to actually eat – I needed to save room for dessert[s], after all), roast beast, sesame chicken, and a nasty buttermilk biscuit, which was the only food item that sucked. Too crunchy and dry.  Mmm, 2 and a half desserts later, we were both very happy campers.

It was time to go see to the fights.
Thunderdome, it was not.
I was surprised to see that the cage was only about 6 feet high, maybe a bit more. Our seats were pretty far back, but they had cameras to show the action on the mat. Yes, young butts in close-up panavision.
Blurry long shot of the cage. I didn’t feel comfortable going up front to take a shot.  The boy with his arms upraised had a red cross on his crotch.  Reminded me of Ratchet.  Geez, I can't go anywhere without thinking of Tformers, can I?

No programs until after the 4th bout was annoying.
Dare I admit it was a teeny bit boring? Oh sure, sexy young things with abs to die for, but…I was looking for more excitement in the matches. Oh, I forgot to mention, it was amateur.   Ah, that’s the problem.
Mostly wrestling with a few punches thrown here and there. And we didn’t know how they were scoring points. Kath joked that it looked like whoever piggybacked the other guy was the winner. Sorry, but that’s what it looked like.  Lots of sexual inuendo.

Although the 6th match was exciting, with more kickboxing action and throws. I enjoyed that one very much. Intermission entertainment was a couple of Native American Hoop Dancers. Pretty cool. I tried to get a couple pics, but with the lighting and distance, they just came out too blurry. But, I have a thing for N.Am’s anyway.

At the end of the 7th (out of 10) match, the smoke and yawn factor got to us. The last match was supposed to be a couple of women, but we just couldn’t stay that long. We left at about 9:30pm.

All in all, it was nice to get out and see something different. I think once was enough for me, though.
It reminded me of something I heard long ago – men settle their differences with fisticuffs, women use poison.
